We have incorporated our green ethos & goals into our recruitment & induction processes as well as auditing our business' social sustainability by interviewing our staff.

The Management and Staff of the Slieve Russell Hotel, Golf & Country Club are committed to taking the following action
- To achieve high standards of environmental practices across our entire operation
- To comply fully with all relevant legislation
- To minimise our waste and reduce our water consumption where possible
- To Reduce, Reuse, Recycle the resources consumed by our business wherever practical
- To invite our customers, suppliers and contractors to participate in our efforts to protect the environment
- To provide all employees with the training and resources required to meet our objectives
- To openly communicate our policies and practices to interested parties
- To monitor and record our environmental impacts on a regular basis.
Set on three hundred acres of gardens, golf course and lakes the Slieve Russell Hotel has provided a warm and friendly welcome to our guests since 1990. Our golf course is home to much wildlife including Buzzards, Red Squirrels, Woodpeckers, Rabbits, Hares, Canadian Geese and much more. Visitors to the hotel enjoy our walkways, gardens and many activities not forgetting our Ciúin Spa and Wellness Centre which is the only GAIA Spa on the island of Ireland. GAIA is the ancient goddess of nature “Mother Earth” and Mother Gaia is a healing Goddess.
Our highlights shared with you
Ciúin Spa & Wellness Centre – We offer fresh water from our well for drinking. Our GAIA products are all packaged within refillable containers, incentives are in place for guests to refill their retail products. Retail bag for life is replaced with a cloth version. Our paper consultation forms are electronic and all spa disposable items such as cotton pads and spatulas have been replaced with washable sustainable products.
Single use plastic– our efforts to reduce single use plastic encourages the reuse of plastic room cards with a commitment to facilitating a mobile phone room key option in the future. We have replaced water bottles from our hotel bedrooms with hydration stations located around bedroom corridors, this effort has reduced our plastic waste by over three thousand bottles per week. Rituals product wall dispensers are fitted throughout our bedrooms replacing single use toiletries. Meeting rooms have water tanks supplied with fresh water from our well replacing single use plastic bottled water. Jams and sauces are served no longer served in single use packaging. Vending machines have been stocked with the best options for recycling and sustainability.
Reducing our paper usage– Our reception team have installed an option to email your receipt rather than printing. Spa consultation cards are completed online. The Gift Shop have considered their packaging on gifting. All HR policies, procedures and paperwork is delivered and completed electronically.
Purchasing Commitment – our purchasing team are committed to making sustainable purchases and using local suppliers as much as possible. New staff uniforms are made with recycled material and our recent machinery purchases for our golf course team are hybrid.
Waste stream – all areas have been fitted with segregated waste bins and team members trained upon induction in our practices.
Electric car charging – we have four car charging points available at the hotel.
Guest participation– a towel reuse programme and bed linen change option is offered to guests by our housekeeping teams. Wedding, meeting and event ideas are shared.
The Green Team– dedicated personnel from each department make up the Green Team, we meet on a monthly basis to see how we can improve or our next steps in making us a more sustainable business. We participate in litter picking in the local area and offer swap shops within our team to help with the cost of living as well as recycling practices.
Our plans for the future – grow our own mint for the mojitos in the bar, reduce our energy consumption and create electronic key cards.
