Maguire Twins News

Leona's British Women's Open Strokeplay Championship Victory

Leona stormed to the Women's British Open Stroke-play title in sensational fashion on Friday 19th August at sunny Royal Ashdown Forest in East Sussex.

Two strokes off the pace at halfway overnight, the 16-year-old Curtis Cup player demolished the field with two breathtaking rounds to win by an amazing six strokes.  Up until Friday no-one had broken par on this ferocious parkland course but Leona did it twice on the final day to pulverise the opposition.

Her third round 69 with halves of 34 and 35 was brilliantly compiled, her highlight being an eagle three on the 477-yard fifth hole- and it put her a commanding five strokes clear with one round remaining.  And she repeated the feat in the afternoon again with halves of 34 and 35. Leona started and finished with birdie threes - and in neither round did she card a six.

In the end Leona posted a 72-hole aggregate of level par 288 winning by six strokes from Belgium's Laurence Herman.  Huge congratulations Leona from all at the Slieve Russell!

Lisa's European Triumph

Yet again we find ourselves extending warm congratulations to both the Maguire Twins on another performance of the highest quality.  Lisa Maguire continued, not only an amazing run for both herself and sister Leona, but also the amazing run of Irish golfing success when she lifted the European Women's Amateur Championship in testing conditions at Noordwijkse Golf Club in the Netherlands on Saturday July 23rd.

She became the first Irish winner of this prestigious tournament since it was inaugurated in 1986. Following her hard fought victory, Lisa said "My sister, Leona, had already won twice this year in Portugal and in Ireland. I had only one victory, in the Spanish Amateur. So we're even now. And this European title was the one I really wanted."  It was another remarkable performance for the Maguire family with Leona finishing in fourth place.

With the Ladies Irish Open and the Junior Solheim Cup to come later this year who knows what further new standards these talented ladies will achieve. We are very proud of their achievements and wish them every luck for the rest of the season.

Lisa Maguire Wins Spanish Amateur Championship

Huge congratulations to Lisa Maguire, who beat France's Emilie Alonso on the final hole to win the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez, Cadiz, 6 March.

Lisa continued her magnificent week-long form into the final and matched her French opponent to turn all square after nine. Lisa edged ahead to take a one-hole lead to the sixteenth tee box and ended the hopes of the French woman closing out the tie on the home green.

Lisa has played superbly all week.  Lisa's sweet revenge for Alonso's defeat of twin sister Leona in the quarter finals should catapult her into the top 20 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings for women golfers, where Leona currently lies 5th and secures a second European title for the ILGU's High Performance squad after Leona's win in the Portuguese Open Amateur Championship at the end of January.

Leona Outclasses Field with 15-Shot Win at Portuguese Ladies Amateur Championship

All at the Slieve Russell extend their warmest congratulations to Leona Maguire on her stunning victory in Portugal by a remarkable 15 shots in the Portuguese Ladies Amateur Open at the Aroeira Club near Lisbon. Leona's final-round 68 left her on 14 under and 15 clear of Germany's Karolin Lampert and Holland's Karlijn Zaanen. Her twin sister Lisa finished in 10th place and the two sisters combined to give Ireland a win in the Nations Cup that was run concurrently with this event.

Ireland Win SILVER at European Girls' Team Championships in Denmark!

Ireland were defeated by France by the narrowest of margins in the final of the European Girls' Team Championships at Aalborg, Denmark, to collect the European SILVER medal.

In a tight and tense encounter, Ireland and opponents France shared the spoils with one match each in the morning foursomes.

The Irish team were gutted, but they can hold their heads high, they did us proud and put up a remarkable defense to their title.

Maguire Twins youngest ever GB & Ireland players at Curtis Cup!

Sadly, the Curtis Cup remains in the possession of the US after the 36th match in the series - at its ancestral home of Essex County Club, Massachusetts - ended with a scoreline of United States 12 1/2-Great Britain and Ireland 7 1/2.

But the GB & Ireland team regained their pride over the final day's eight singles in which the honours were shared with four wins to either side. Not a bad performance at all against the all-star American line-up, of whom at least two will become tour professionals within a week or two.

Leona & Lisa have become the youngest GB & I representatives to play in the Curtis Cup, aged 15, having already set an age record when they appeared at the age of 14 in the GB&I team for last summer's Vagliano Trophy match.  The Maguire twins are going to be even better by the time 2012 Curtis Cup is played.
